Viewing Spatial data on QGIS Desktop

GIS data use multiple formats for storage , This tutorial uses three datasets stored in a file geodatabase (.gdb file); In this section, you will use these datasets for Viewing GIS data on QGIS Desktop.

In the coming sections, you will use these datasets in the coming sections of this tutorial.

Certainly, You can follow the same procedure with other spatial data formats like: Shapefiles, Geopackages, personal geodatabases, …etc.

In this section, You will use QGIS Desktop to explore spatial datasets stored inside the file geodatabase:

  • Buildings dataset
  • Land Parcels dataset
  • Urban Master Plan dataset

You need to download the compressed file containing the file geodatabase from this link and extract it to a certain directory on your machine (e.g. D:\GeoGATE_Data) as in the screenshot below.

The following screenshots goes through exploring spatial data using QGIS Desktop.

The first step is adding the Urban Master Plan dataset, and viewing it on QGIS Desktop.

You can now see the Urban Master Plan layer on map

Now open the attributes table of the layer in order to explore the layer attribute data, by right-clicking the layer and clicking (Open Attribute Table)

Next, do the same with the Parcels layer to view it on map and explore its data via the attribute table.

Finally, do the same with the Buildings layer to view it on map and explore its data using the attribute table.
